Lycian tombs in Xanthos. The Lion Pillar, named because of the large lion in high relief, was located east of the Acropolis of Xanthos and stands around 3 metres (9.8 ft) high. The stone chest is of white limestone, carved to fit the body. It has been postulated that this tomb was created between the early- and mid-6th century BCE.

The Lion Tomb is accepted as the oldest of the Lycian-style pillar tombs by most researchers on account of the relief styles. It is located to the east of the Roman acropolis. The tomb chamber, which was formed by carving the top of the 3-meter-high column, was decorated with reliefs.

The Nereid Monument is a sculptured tomb from Xanthos in Lycia (then part of the Achaemenid Persian Empire), close to present-day Fethiye in Mugla Province, Turkey.

This gallery contains the Nereid Monument, the largest and finest of the Lycian tombs from Xanthos, south-west Turkey. Although influenced by Greek and Persian styles, the people of the mountainous land of ancient Lykia had a unique style of funerary architecture.

Apr 7, 2016 · In 390 BCE the Lycian King Arbinas asserted control over Lycia, ruled from Xanthos, built the famous Nereid Monument as his tomb, and died in 370 BCE. Xanthos surrendered to Alexander the Great in 334 BCE.

Among them, are the Nereid Monument, Harpys Monument, and the Lion Tomb. Today, many artifacts taken from here are exhibited in the Lycia Hall of the British Museum. Charles Fellows introduced the Lycian civilization to the world by taking these remains, which aroused great interest in this civilization.

Xanthos is the only place where 15 existing monumental tombs have been found. The Inscribed Tomb Monument stands at 4 metres tall and features the longest surviving Lycian inscription. The Harpies Monument, which was taken to England, has reliefs of human and siren figures in its remaining parts.
