Sylgar was the name of the prized pet goldfish of the Xanathar, Zushaxx. As of 1492 DR , [ note 2 ] unbeknownst to its owner, the fish had died and been replaced by the members of the Xanathar's Thieves' Guild several times.

Xanathar's pet fish, Sylgar, is the only creature that the beholder loves as much as itself. In fact, there have been many Sylgars over the years, but Ott is skilled at acquiring a replacement before Xanathar realises its beloved pet has died.

Xanathar is the head of a criminal organization and has a pet goldfish which is essentially the one thing in the world he truly cares about. As mentioned in the editors note of xanathars, given the life expectancy of a goldfish it is highly likely that this is golfish number 50 or so, but gods help the poor soul that reveals that to Xanathar

Dec 11, 2017 · Yes, I am fairly aware that Xanathar’s beloved goldfish is a tongue-in-cheek parallel to the Xanathar title itself, with the goldfish constantly replaced by nearly identical goldfish to maintain order and control, much as the name Xanathar is taken up by Beholders who kill the previous Xanathar.
