Aug 28, 2022 · The XIT Ranch in the 1880’s was the largest ranch in the world under fence, and it all laid in the Texas Panhandle. Its three million acres sprawled from the old Yellowhouse headquarters near what is now Lubbock, Texas, northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle, in an irregular strip that was roughly about thirty miles wide.

Today, our family owned and operated ranches are located in the original Rita Blanca division of the XIT west of Channing, TX and in Southern Colorado next to the Spanish Peaks.

In 1885, the Farwell brothers from Chicago founded the XIT Ranch of Texas. The XIT’s ranchlands in Texas have an interesting origin story — the State of Texas was land rich but cash poor and was in dire need of a new Capitol Building after a terrible fire in 1881.

XIT Rodeo & Reunion. The XIT Ranch, founded in 1885, will celebrate its 140th Anniversary in 2025 in conjunction with the 89th Annual XIT Rodeo & Reunion which is held the first full weekend of August in Dalhart, Texas. All descendants of John V. and Charles B. Farwell are invited to a Family Reunion August 1st – 3rd, 2025.
