On September 16, 1974, 32 women across Canada simultaneously took the oath to become police officers, fundamentally changing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police forever. They arrived at Depot to begin training on September 18 and 19.

This year, we're marking the 50th anniversary of Troop 17, the first group of women to join the RCMP as police officers. To commemorate this historic milestone, current and former employees are sharing their personal stories about the RCMP.

In 2024, we’re celebrating 50 years since Troop 17 became the first group of women to take the oath to become regular members of the RCMP and begin their training at Depot, the RCMP’s training academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Since 1974, women have made significant contributions as RCMP officers in every part of Canada and around the world. The RCMP is committed to increasing the number of female police officers in our organization.

Today, approximately one fifth of the RCMP's police officers (also known as regular members) are women, with more and more women in the senior ranks (inspector and above). The RCMP's first female commissioner was Bev Busson, who took the helm of the force in 2006.

March 2025, marks the anniversary of the first ever female officers to have graduated from RCMP Depot Academy and become RCMP officers. To celebrate 50 years of women in the RCMP, we interviewed several women with deep and long-standing ties to policing.
