Mar 14, 2019 · In a career spanning seven decades, she embraced not only the Surrealist painting for which she is best known, but also poetry, a series of groundbreaking soft sculptures, and costume and set design for the ballet.

Artist's Chronology, in her own words... August 25th, Galesburg, Illinois. Second daughter of Andrew and Amanda Tanning. Education in Galesburg public schools. Graduation 1926 from high school (the building burned down in 1965). Two grades had been “skipped” thus creating a lifelong weakness in arithmetic.

Tanning’s first retrospective took place in Knokke-le Zoute in Belgium in the summer of 1967. In the late 1960s Tanning’s practice shifted once again, moving from drawing, design and painting to three-dimensional sculptural works fashioned from soft textiles and found items.
