Minnesota has more acres of natural wild rice (Zizania palustris) than any other state in the country. Wild rice has been historically documented in 45 of Minnesota's 87 counties and in all corners of the state.

Wild rice, also called manoomin, mnomen, psíŋ, Canada rice, Indian rice, or water oats, is any of four species of grasses that form the genus Zizania, and the grain that can be harvested from them.

Nov 16, 2016 · Many of the wild rice waters shown on the map will not have significant amounts of wild rice for harvesting purposes. The mapping tool highlights entire water bodies where wild rice has been found, but rice beds may occupy only a small portion of the lake, river or stream.

This data layer shows results of modeled wild rice presence throughout Minnesota in 2023 by the MN DNR Resource Assessment Program. Models incorporated pre- and post-emergence Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, observations from The Collaborative State Tribal Wild Rice Monitoring Program, and Google Earth Engine.
