1880 Cowboy Town provides a near perfect balance of fear and fun. As we enter the "Gold Mine" building, a half dozen flying creatures swoop from the rafters and out the doors (bats, or perhaps barn swallows).

Every building was moved here from somewhere in South Dakota and then placed in the setting of an original western town. Building are complete with a lot of original memorabilia that is historically accurate.

The History of 1880 Town When Richard Hullinger bought 14 acres at Exit 170 back in 1969 he had no plans for an attraction. In 1972 a gas station was built at this location along with forming an idea of an old west attraction.

This was a fun little roadside attraction! Basically all these buildings from the mid-1800s had been brought to this place and positioned in a way that it looks like an old Western town. You are able to walk through most of the buildings, which all have an abundance of props/artifacts on display.

South Dakota's Original 1880 TOWN has more than 30 buildings from the 1880 to 1920 era, authentically furnished with thousands of relics, historical accounts and photographs, a Casey Tibbs exhibit, Dances with Wolves movie props, and fun activities for kids.

Located 22 miles west of Murdo on I-90, 1880 Town is South Dakota’s attic. It’s not a crammed attic, though, thanks to its setting on the vast prairie. You gaze down Main Street to the horizon beyond, not to adjacent neighborhoods and tall fast food signs.
