In East Germany, the terms Westdeutschland (West Germany) or westdeutsche Bundesrepublik (West German Federal Republic) were preferred during the 1950s and 1960s. This changed under its constitutional amendment in 1974, when the idea of a single German nation was abandoned by East Germany.

The German national flag or Bundesflagge (English: Federal flag), containing only the black-red-gold tricolour, was introduced as part of the (West) German constitution in 1949. [4] Following the creation of separate government and military flags in later years, the plain tricolour is now used as the German civil flag and civil ensign .

West Germany adopted the black-red and gold flag, while East Germany which was under Soviet rule used the black, red, and gold flag, featuring the coat of arms of East Germany on the flag. However, use of this flag was forbidden in West Germany because it was considered to be a sign against unification.

It was used as is in the Federal German Republic, aka West Germany, and in East Germany a laurel of Wheat with a hammer and compass inside was placed over the tricolour. After reunion of Germany in 1990 the blank tricolour was used only and the eastern design was abandoned.
