There are two variants of a welded thermowell;, namely a socket weld thermowell, and a weld-in thermowell. A socket weld thermowell is typically welded into a weldolet socket, but the thermowell may be welded directly into the pipe wall.

Reotemp Welded Thermowells make it possible to remove an instrument without dropping pressure or losing the contents of the process. Thermowells also protect the instrument from getting bent by the process media.

Weld-In thermowells, as the name implies are typically welded directly into the wall of the pipe by means of a full penetration weld. These bullet shaped thermowells are common in high velocity steam applications.
