Hugh Nanton Romney Jr. (born May 15, 1936), known as Wavy Gravy, is an American entertainer and peace activist best known for his role at Woodstock, as well as for his hippie persona and countercultural beliefs.

Wavy Gravy is not your ordinary clown. He certainly has had a long run since his earlier days as a poet and stand-up comic, improvisational theater artist, psychedelic bus caravan luminary, and rock concert MC, and often jokes: “if you don’t have a sense of humor, it just isn’t funny anymore.”

Wavy Gravy remains an influential figure in American counterculture and activism. His blend of humor, compassion, and unwavering commitment to peace has inspired generations of seekers and activists. As a "cosmic clown," he has spread the message of love, unity, and the inherent decency of all human beings.

He’s a former comic and poet turned clown, a peace activist and hippie icon. As figurehead for the Hog Farm commune, he made announcements from the stage of the 1969 Woodstock festival. He even had a flavor of ice cream named after him. He calls himself Wavy Gravy.

Jun 7, 2023 · At 87, Wavy Gravy remains “an authentic unreconstructed hippie idealist living the communal life, doing good works and advocating peace, love, and laughter, in the guise of a clown.” Clowns usually stop at laughter, but Gravy (get used to it) has spread his joy in a lifetime of humanitarianism.

He’s the jester who taught us that laughter can be as healing as any medicine, that love is the ultimate revolution, and that sometimes, the best way to make a difference is to be a little ridiculous.

Wavy Gravy named himself the “Please Chief” of the Hog Farm’s “Please Force." He was in charge of Woodstock festival security.

Wavy Gravy has spent many years trying his best to make the world a better place. As part of this effort, he has co-founded two organizations that have been his life’s work. Camp Winnarainbow and the Seva Foundation have been his main focus for decades as he works to bring eyesight to the blind, and smiles to children’s faces.
