Wave packet - Wikipedia
In physics, a wave packet (also known as a wave train or wave group) is a short burst of localized wave action that travels as a unit, outlined by an envelope.
The Gaussian is called a wavepacket because of its Fourier transform: it is a packet of waves with frequencies/wavenumbers clustered around a single value kc (the subscript “c” is for “car-rier”, as we explain below). One of the most important applications of wavepackets is in communication. How do we encode information in waves?

A wave packet is a combination of waves with about the same momentum. Combining waves into wave packets can provide localization of particles. The envelope of the wave packet shows the region where the particle is likely to be found.

Thus, Equation ([e2.45]) is the wavefunction of a particle that is initially localized around x = x0 in some region whose width is of order Δx. This type of wavefunction is known as a wave-packet. Figure 7: A Gaussian probability distribution in -space. According to Equation ([e2.42]), ψ(x, 0) = ∫∞ − ∞ˉψ(k)eikxdk.

Aug 13, 2020 · We know from the photoelectric effect and Compton scattering that the photon energy and momentum are related to the frequency and wavelength of the light by E = hν = ℏω. p = h λ = ℏk. Notice, then, that the wave equation tells us that ω = ck and hence E = cp.

Apr 1, 2025 · Thus, plane light-waves and light pulses both propagate through a vacuum at the characteristic speed \(c=3\times 10^8\,{\rm m/s}\). Of course, the dispersion relation for particle waves is not linear in \(k\). Hence, particle plane-waves and particle wave-packets propagate at different velocities, and particle wave-packets also gradually ...
wavepacket is a superposition of plane waves eikx with various wavelengths. Let us work with wavepackets at t = 0. Such a wavepacket is of the form. If we know (x; 0) then (k) is calculable. In fact, by the Fourier inversion theorem, the function. …
For many kinds of waves, the speed of the wave is the same for all frequencies and wavelengths. This is the case for light in a vacuum and for a wave traveling down a string under tension. We say that these waves are non-dispersive.

Apr 8, 1999 · In the 5 April PRL, physicists present experimental evidence for the existence of a photonic de Broglie wavelength–wave features associated with a packet of photons interfering with itself.

Now we construct a wave packet. Each time you click on add one, an additional wave with a different momentum and wavelength will be added to the wave displayed on the screen. All of these waves constructively interfere in the region near the center of the screen.
