The Volkssturm (German pronunciation: [ˈfɔlksʃtʊʁm] ⓘ, lit. 'people's storm') [1][2] was a levée en masse national militia established by Nazi Germany during the last months of World War II. It was set up by the Nazi Party on the orders of Adolf Hitler and established on 25 September 1944. [3] .

During 1944-1945, the Volkssturm, or People’s Militia, was designed to promote “a violent burst of fanatic rage against the invaders” and thus salvage victory.

On September 25, 1944, anticipating the invasion of the German Fatherland, the Volkssturm (People’s Army) was formed under the overall command of Joseph Goebbels. Every available male aged 16 to 60 was conscripted into this new army and trained to use the Panzerfaust anti-tank weapon. Objections to using even younger boys were ignored.
