The Besal or Faulkner light machine gun was a Bren-inspired emergency design developed in the aftermath of the French campaign and the Dunkirk Evacuation in which the British Expeditionary Force lost almost 30,000 Brens and given the vulnerability of a single, well known, manufacturing site for the Bren at Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield.

While never completely replacing the Vickers, the Bren did serve as the primary support arm for British and Commonwealth troops through World War II and Korea, and set the British small-unit infantry tactics on a path they would follow until the 1980s.

The Bren team was responsible for the operation of the Light Machine Gun (LMG). During combat, this three man element would provide a base of covering fire while the remainder of the section (six privates armed with the No. 4 Lee–Enfield Rifle, [5] and their corporal commanding) would flank the enemy in an effort to either capture or kill them.

Initially, the corporals were armed with Thompsons, though this was later switched to Stens. There was also a two-man Bren gun team, the second man carrying ammunition for his comrade firing the section’s main machine gun.

The Bren became the centre of all section tactics during WW2, and had it's own transport in the form of the Universal (Bren) Carrier. It remained the standard section weapon long after the war and soldiered on into the 1980's rechambered and barrelled for 7.62 ammunition.

The original role envisaged for the Universal Carrier was for a fast, lightly armed vehicle to carry infantry across ground denied by small-arms fire and specifically, the Bren light machine gun and its team, hence the name Bren Gun Carrier.

The Bren machine gun has been used everywhere, and there have been numerous outstanding reports on combat performance. A bold action took place on September 18, 1944, when Sherbahadur Thapa the 1st/9th Gurkhas seized a Bren and stormed a machine gun position, killing the German gunner.
