Nov 8, 2009 · Yes, the FAA has MON but you might be that poor sap who is stuck 100nm in ANY direction from a VOR or ILS approach. So we need to keep VORs or at the very least bring back LORAN. A system based on low power AM signals are harder to jam then a barely above the noise floor GPS signal.

Jul 30, 2018 · Does it have glide slope? If it's a 2nd NAV radio then foregoing it isn't that big a loss in today's IFR environment. In a pinch, I think one could get by in the VOR MON system with just a single NAV radio in case of a GPS outage. However, 2 would be nicer. Also, the 30day VOR checks are much easier with 2 NAV radios.

Such considerations as other nearby VOR approaches, training requirements and such were considered. This is only tangentially related to the VOR MON program, the reduction of actual VOR facilities across the U.S.

If the VOR has been out for a while, it likely is scheduled to be fully decommissioned in phase 1 or 2 of the VOR MON program.

From every point in the NAS, there will be at least one airport within 100 NM that has approaches that only use VOR or ILS without any dependency on Radar, NDB, DME, or GPS.
