It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video.

VirtualDub isn't an editor application; it's a pre- and post-processor that works as a valuable companion to one: Reads and writes AVI2 (OpenDML) and multi-segment AVI clips. Integrated MPEG-1 and Motion-JPEG decoders.

Jan 9, 2011 · There are two new versions of VirtualDub now available through SourceForge on the download page. The first release is a new stable release, 1.9.11. This release contains only one new change over 1.9.10, which is the addition of a filter compatibility mode.

VirtualDub has been developed across five operating system versions -- Windows 95 OSR2, 98, NT4.0 Server, NT4.0 Workstation, and 2000 -- and two versions of Visual C++, 4.0 and 6.0. And so on... Well, VirtualDub has come a long way from its humble beginnings.

VirtualDub filters can be loaded manually by clicking on the Load button that appears in the Add Filters dialog box. They can also be automatically loaded at startup if you copy the .vdf file into a plugins subdirectory under the VirtualDub program directory.
