VTAPX is less affected by interest rate changes compared to VIPSX, but pays less interest, which you can see by looking at 3,5,10 year returns. Interest rates have spiked up year-to-date causing VIPSX to drop more than VTAPX. VIPSX is more appropriate if this is a long term holding.

Apr 21, 2020 · Since VIPSX is made up of TIPS, it doesn't seem like it would be losing principal. I don't know how turnover or other factors would affect the NAV. Does it protect against deflation? It's not designed to. I wouldn't think the losses would be that great. I have no idea how VIPSX would do vs a total bond fund.

Dec 26, 2008 · VIPSX is a mutual fund. You can chart the NAV (share price) of VIPSX anytime you have access to the internet with a computer. So you can see when VIPSX has lost money (buy in March 2008; sell in Oct 2009) and when it has made money (buy in July 2007; sell in March of 2008. buy in Nov 2009).

Sep 23, 2011 · I'd ignore the difference in dividends. We know that all TIPS mutual funds and ETFs pay out all the interest and inflation adjustment. The difference between TIP and VIPSX is probably just timing of distributions. I see the same slight difference. For the 5 years ending 8/31/2011 TIP has returned 7.05% annually while VIPSX has returned only 6.82%.

The real duration of VIPSX is about 7 years and the real yield at about that term has increased from a low of about -2% in the middle of 2021 to about 0.5% now. Just roughly a delta of 2.5% on a duration of 7 years depresses NAV by 17.5%.

Aug 19, 2022 · VIPSX/VAIPX and FIPDX are standard mutual funds. They are best held if you have an account at the firm that issues them. E.g., buy VIPSX or VAIPX only in a Vanguard account. Buy FIPDX only in a Fidelity account. Otherwise I suggest buying an exchange traded mutual TIPS fund (an ETF). E.g., I don't believe E-Trade has its own TIPS mutual fund.
