The Akademiemodel Wiener oboe, commonly referred to as the Wiener oboe or Viennese oboe, is a type of modern oboe first developed in the 1880s by Josef Hajek. The design of the Wiener oboe retains the essential bore and tonal characteristics of the historical oboe.

The Viennese oboe employs a different bore design, fingering system, and reed to that of the French conservatory oboe. Along with the Viennese horn and timpani, the Viennese oboe is a traditionally defining member of the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestras, as it is characteristic to their unique sound.

This is a remark­able and very impor­tant oboe of the Roman­tic era, an instru­ment sig­nif­i­cant from the point of view of not only nine­teenth-cen­tu­ry Vien­na music, but also for the his­to­ry of oboe in gen­er­al, par­tic­u­lar­ly the Ger­man oboe.

The French-style oboe has become the standard in most orchestras worldwide, while the German-style oboe, also known as the Wiener oboe, is primarily used in Vienna and surrounding areas. The choice between French and German oboes impacts not only the instrument itself but also the reeds and playing style.

For that reason, this style is called the Wiener oboe. Such instruments are characterized by their somewhat nasal-sounding, bright and rich tones. They are a direct development of the three-keyed Baroque oboe of the 18th century.
