Its coat of arms bears the motto "Liberté et patrie" on a white-green bicolour. Vaud is the third-largest Swiss canton by population and fourth by size.

The lettering in the Vaudois flag was in black or in green during 1803–1819, the gold was introduced with the military flag as Vaud organised its army in 1819. As such, it violates the heraldic rule of tincture which states that gold (or yellow) may not be placed upon silver (or white).

Nov 4, 2023 · The meaning of the flag is: The white cross is the cross of Savoy, to which Vaud belonged for three centuries (1206–1536). The green is the colour of the actual State of Vaud (since 1803). The sword in the middle is the sword of the Habsburg previously by the 1st Burgundian Empire.

Nov 22, 2022 · Canton Vaud has another two color flag, green and white, however in this case there is also a motto: Liberté et patrie. This means Freedom and Homeland.
