Small, thin, rhizomes and fibrous roots. The relatively small elliptical floating and submersed leaves and distinctively veined leaves of this plant helps to distinguish it from most other pondweeds.

NATIVE: Variable-leaf pondweed has both floating and submerged leaves that are elliptical to oval in shape. Floating leaves usually have 7-10 distinct veins. Submersed leaves are arranged alternately on the stem and are usually smaller than the floating leaves.
