Marine Observation Squadron 2 (VMO-2) was an observation squadron of the United States Marine Corps which saw extensive action during World War II and the Vietnam War.

In September, a detachment of 6 CH-37Cs from HMH-462 was attached to H&MS-16 at MMAF. On 12 Sep, all O-1B pilots from VMO-2 were sent to Okinawa, and the O-1B was “parked” at the Da Nang airstrip. VMO-2 lost their “V”, becoming an all-helicopter squadron for the first time.

The VMO-2 Sub Unit is the last Navy organization to utilize the services of the piston-driven helo. Since 1958 the unit has supported Marines attached to Camp Fuji, located at the base of Mt Fujiyama.

From 1965 VMO-2 flew the UH-1E Huey and AH-1G Cobra in Vietnam before becoming an OV-10 Bronco aircraft only unit in 1969 until 1993 when it is deactivated. 1968-69, I was in VMO-2. We flew UH-1E and OV-10A.

VMO-2: Nicknamed "Cherry Deuce”, Marine Observation Squadron Two was activated at Quantico, Virginia on November 1, 1943. Originally designated VMO-251, the group moved to San Diego in December for additional training.

The sapper team attacking the VMO-2 area penetrated the maintenance and admin area and out onto the parking ramp. Once in the parking area they commenced a methodical attack on each helicopter. A Chief Hospitalman [HMC Walter J. Gelien], standing his watch in a medevac UH-1E was killed in action.
