The VIP scale for evaluation of phlebitis - Delta Med
The VIP scale provides a score from 0 to 5, in ascending order of severity of inflammation. Each grade identifies a more or less advanced state of phlebitis or thrombophlebitis and differs in the evidence of specific signs and actions to be taken.
Infusion phlebitis assessment measures: a systematic review
Any score of 1 or greater is considered phlebitis. Several studies included in the current review used an assessment tool based either on the INS scale or an adaptation 24,25,29,30,34,70–76.
VIP Score - IVTEAM
The Visual Infusion Phlebitis score is a very popular tool for monitoring infusion sites. In 2006 Paulette Gallant and Alyce Schultz completed an evaluation of the VIP score as a tool that determines the appropriate discontinuation of peripheral intravenous catheters.

Feb 21, 2011 · Grade 4 – Pain at access site with erythema and/or edema, streak formation, palpable venous cord greater than 1 in in length; purulent drainage. The other is the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) scale, developed by Andrew Jackson, Consultant Nurse Intravenous Therapy and Care, Rotherham General Hospitals, NHS Trust.
Place must have the IV site checked at least daily for signs of infusion phlebitis. The subsequent score And action(s) taken (if any) must be documented. The incidence of infusion phlebitis varies. The Following ‘Good Practice Points’ may assist in Reducing the incidence of infusion phlebitis:

Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) - Assessment Scale v1
Level 0 indicates no signs of phlebitis, while higher levels between 1 to 5 represent increasing severity from possible first signs to advanced thrombophlebitis, with recommended actions such as observing, resiting the cannula, considering treatment, or initiating treatment.
