VFA-31 deployed onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) for its first F/A-18E Super Hornet cruise in 2008. The Tomcatters dominated the skies above Afghanistan flying over 6,000 hours and 2,000 sorties in direct support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

VF-31, the Tomcatters, was the last active Tomcat squadron. In 2006, when the Tomcat retired, the squadron was redesignated VFA-31. The squadron is currently stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA, flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet (see photo below).

Jun 18, 2022 · Once arriving VFA-31 began flying in support of “Operation Inherent Resolve”. This meant numerous ground attacks against ISS targets in Syria as well as peaceful intercepts of MiG-29s. The USS George H.W. Bush and the “Tomcatters” returned to NAS Oceana.

US Navy Strike Fighter squadrons number about 30, and consist primarily of 12 F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets (Rhinos) or 10 F/A-18C Legacy Hornets. When not deployed on a carrier, these squadrons make their home at NAS Lemoore in CA, NAS Oceana in VA, or NAF Atsugi, Japan.
