Often the customer sees horizontal wiggling or vertical jitter in the picture. If the VCR is known to be good, look at these other possible causes: Videotape - old, used-many-times, video tapes can get worn. They lose oxide and often develop a ripple along the edge of the tape.

The vertical sync could be corrupted or the head switching point not set correctly. The head switching point is 6.5 lines before vertical sync. If this ends up moving into vertical sync for some reason, you will get unstable video.

Apr 7, 2017 · There are many artifacts on video tape that are invisible on a TV screen that can cause capture problems. Most likely is the head switching noise line that causes vertical sync problems. Most TVs ignore it (and it is off the visible screen area) but a capture device will see it.
