Jul 3, 2015 · Utah Railway had inspected a group of SP SD45s at Ogden, Utah, and selected the best four. These four units joined the four ex-BN F45s already in service on Utah Railway and were needed to support the new IPP train, which began operation on June 16, 1985. Two more ex-SP SD45s arrived in late 1985.

On July 18, 2003, with the help of Warren Johnson, we measured Utah Railway SD50S 6061 at the railroad's Midvale, Utah engine facility. It turns out that what we know as the Australian SD50S is 10 inches shorter than the US SD40-2, and 3 feet shorter than the US SD50.

The two locomotives can be distinguished by the door panels; the SD-50 features four latched doors in six door panels whereas the SD-60 has six latched doors in eight door panels. The "wide nose" or "safety cab" was first offered as an option to US railroads in 1988.

Utah Railway rosters five SD50S locomotives built in Australia for Hamersley Iron Ore in 1982-83. The units feature a frame that is three feet shorter than EMD's domestic SD50's. The units, numbered 6060-64 have worked on the Utah for more than two years.

Back in October of 2005, the sight of Utah Railway SD50 motors rambling along a weed grown branch seemed like observing the passage of royalty. Sporting their shiny paint jobs, decked out in the contemporary livery, it really was a sight to behold.
