Uronarti is an island and archaeological site in the Nile just south of the Second Cataract in the north of Sudan. The site features a massive ancient fortress that still stands on its northern end. This fortress is one of many constructed along the Nile in Lower Nubia during the Middle Kingdom, beginning under the reign of Senusret I.

Uronarti is one of the southern group of fortresses built in the Middle Kingdom in the region of the Second Cataract. Like many of the southern forts, Uronarti’s shape conforms to the rocky landscape in which it was built.

Uronarti, an island fortress in the Batn el-Hagar near the Egyptian-Kush border, was constructed during the reign of Senwosret III as part of a defensive network. Renewed excavations since 2012 by the Uronarti Regional Archaeological Project aim to re-evaluate the fortress’s colonial architecture and its long-term occupation dynamics.
