In the United States, the type was used only on the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP), which called it the Southern Pacific, and the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), which called it the Overland after their corporate sobriquet, The Overland Route.

Used in several regions, the class had joined the 9000s (three-cylinder 4-12-2) on the prairies in Kansas when they began retiring. Most had had the center driver replaced with a Boxpok main driver. 5094 and 5096 were the first to go out of service in 1948, followed by 5098-5099 in 1949.

The "long legged" UP 4-10-2 #8807 was built by Alco-Brooks in May of 1926 (serial #66733, class FTT-2. Although not particularly successful as a 3 cylinder variant, the loco was rebuilt by the UP shops.
