About - UNFICYP
UNFICYP is one of the longest-running UN Peacekeeping missions. It was set up in 1964 to prevent further fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island and bring about a return to normal conditions.
UNFICYP Mandate
As given in resolution 186 (1964), UNFICYP’s mandate is to use its best efforts to: prevent a recurrence of fighting; contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order;
Leadership - UNFICYP
Currently, Major General Batsuuri was appointed as the Force commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Major General Batsuuri had a distinguished career in the Mongolian Armed Forces, serving most recently as the Chief of Staff at the Mongolian Air Force Command (2020- 2024).

UNFICYP drives women’s full and equal representation and participation in the peace processes and security efforts On 11 September, UNFICYP peacekeepers met the Canadian Ambassador on Women, Peace and Security, Jacqueline O’Neill, who visited UNFICYP to learn about how the Mission is implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in Cyprus.
About the buffer zone - UNFICYP
UNFICYP keeps permanent watch over the buffer zone with patrols in vehicles, on foot, on bicycles and by helicopter. Additionally, a highly mobile unit stands ready to respond to emergencies within the buffer zone.

UNFICYP’s 850-plus troops and 60-plus police officers deal with hundreds of incidents each year. UNFICYP through its mandate on humanitarian assistance, delivers humanitarian aid to Greek Cypriots and a small Maronite community living in the northern part of the island and it assists Turkish Cypriots living in the southern part of the island.
Military - UNFICYP
UNFICYP military maintains day-to-day contact with its counterparts from the opposing forces on all levels to prevent escalation of tensions within or along the buffer zone. In addition, there are 4 central units, stationed in the United Nation Protected Area on the outskirts of Nicosia.
