Feb 26, 2021 · No Ummon is not worth it for lattes. Literally anything off Ippodo is going to be better than Trader Joe's packets. I would recommend Ikuyo for an everyday latte matcha, and you can get it in a 100G bag. Ippodo is great since they have a US front, however they are pricey.

In general, a lot of the Ummon dialogue is inspired by the cryptic poetry of Zen koans. After all, the historical Ummon was a Chinese Chan master of the Tang era (Chan is what we know here in the west as 'Zen'). They are deliberately paradoxical. They are mind-puzzles. Writing about them is really useless 😸. Talking about them is even more so!

Dec 4, 2023 · Ummon was the best I’ve ever had (even compared to some crazy high end ones on Breakaway), Sayaka was great, Horai was fine but you have to use twice as much to get the same flavor as Sayaka so it’s actually more expensive.

Feb 21, 2021 · Next, the Ummon. I found multiple great reviews on here. While the JL TECG or Ikuyo is good enough for my lazier matcha drinks/multiple times a day, I intend to use the Ummon for the infrequent special thick teas. On that note, Ikuyo isn't mentioned as being for thick tea on their site but it actually worked out decent.

Of course I know the pricier ones are better quality but is something like their sayaka-no-Mukashi at 20$ for a 40g can as good as their ummon-no-Mukashi which is 40$ for a 40g tin? So which one, as a beginner, is worth buying for a first timer at Ippodo?

For example, the Ummon matcha is $30 on the Ippodo website (free shipping $39+), vs the $14.30 (converted) at the main store. The stores I went to: Ippodo, main store (Kyoto) - Founded in 1717 and once a purveyor to the Imperial family.
