Details: Should you go to Route 2, the man near Guzma's house will speak to you about a lost Meowth, mentioning how it likes to live near old tires. You can then encounter it by the truck nearby. As you do, you will be given the option of either grabbing it or staring at it.

Route 2 will lead you to Verdant Cavern, where your first Island Trial will be held. You will also have access to Hau'oli Cemetery and Big Wave Beach off Route 2. While on Route 2, you will again run into the Ultra Recon Squad.
