The multigenerational team comprising Laneta Fitisemanu, Nu'uausala Eliga Tilo III, Kimo Watanabe, and Jacob Fitisemanu Jr. studied collections and documentation at the Peabody Museum to recreate a nineteenth-century Samoan 'ula lei (whale ivory necklace).

The ‘ula, ‘ei, kahoa, lei, salusalu show both the connections we have as people interlaced in culture across Pasifika, and also our differences with each Island having its own unique incarnations of these famous and most Pacific of adornments.

Handcrafted in Samoa. The 'Ula Fala are made from the pandanus fruit. The pieces are dried and painted red. The lei or necklace, measures approximately 45" long. In Polynesia, red is usually the color reserved for royalty. Only royalty were permitted to wear the color. But it was more than that.
