Oct 17, 2015 · Unwrap the whole piece with Unwrap from View. In UV image editor use Pinning P to pin the flat vertices (so they are not effected with next unwrapping). Use Unwrap on the whole piece and unpin with AltP. This will yield better results than Minimizing stretch on the piece or using UV sculpt. Aligning verts and sewing in UV image editor:

I am not satisfied with "cylindrical proyecction" and even with "smart UV" for triangulated mesh in this case, consider that icosphere is a triangulated mesh.
