The United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842 was an exploring and surveying expedition of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding lands conducted by the United States. The original appointed commanding officer was Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones.

They called it the U.S. Ex. Ex., or simply the Ex. Ex., shorthand for the United States South Seas Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. It was an unprecedented naval operation, especially for a nation with a navy that was less than half the size of Great Britian's.

On the sunny, breezy morning of August 18, 1838, the six sailing vessels of the South Seas Exploring Expedition, or Ex. Ex. as it was called, were under way from the naval port of Hampton Roads, Virginia.
