Jan 28, 2022 · Since the US Minor Outlaying Islands has a separate code than the greater United States (UM vs US), they get their own flag emoji, but since they don't have an actual unifying flag they just get the American flag again. Why duplicates like this are included on the main screen of emoji keyboards I will never understand.

My advice, just leave your biases at the door and if there's no icon that you want to use in the list, then either find another or not use any at all.

The design of the flag pictured in the emoji is the same, but they're logically distinct regions that just happen to use the same flag. I guess one day the Outlying Islands could adopt a different flag, and then the image could change without needing to add a whole new emoji.
