Apr 25, 2009 · UPS announced today during our quarterly earnings report that we will accelerate the retirement of our DC-8 fleet. The fleet will be retired by the end of May 2009. UPS has planned for several years to retire the DC-8 by 2013 as part of the Airline’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy.

These Douglas DC-8s, Boeing 727-100s and Boeing 747-100s were converted from passenger aircraft to freighters. Of 556 DC-8 aircraft manufactured from 1958 to 1972, around 200 were still in commercial service in 2002, mostly used as freighters and nearly half (97) operated by UPS.

Jan 1, 2006 · UPS has only taken 2 DC-8s off the books. Both were parted out. That leaves 47 on the books. As of October 2005, there were 25 in active service, 4 allocated to heavy maintenance, 12 operational spares and 6 in long term storage. UPS has NO plans to retire the DC-8.
