The GE U30C is a six-axle locomotive built by General Electric from 1966 to 1976. With 600 units sold, the U30C proved to be a viable alternative for customers who were unable to purchase SD40s from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) due to production backlog.

The Espee's U30C's were delivered in two lots, the first 7900-7929 in 1968 being Phase II's, and the last 7930-7936 delivered in 1969 being Phase III's. The trucks were interchangable, so it was possible to see a U30C with a different truck at each end... The remaining U30C's were traded to GE for B36-7's in 1984.

Built by General Electric between 1966 and 1976, the six-axle, 3000-h.p. U30C locomotive was General Electric’s alternative to EMD’s SD40 series. In that ten year time frame, GE built 600 U30C’s for a wide variety of operators.

Most, if not all, of the U30Cs were retrofitted with Gyralites by the D&H. The electrical prints for the U30Cs were modified with the Gyralite in 1971, and the modifications were carried out on through late 1974 and early 1975. Since the U30Cs were ready for major overhauls during this period, they received the lights. All went to NdeM in 1978.

Union Pacific and Burlington Northern owned the largest fleets, with BN using its U30Cs to haul coal from the massive Powder River Basin deposits in Montana and Wyoming. Many U30Cs served nearly three decades before retirement in the early 1990s.

The U30C was an evolutionary re-rating of the U28C, and the first U30Cs were visually indistinguishable from later versions of the U28Cs. The U33C and U36C were essentially the same locomotive as the U30C but with an advanced fuel rack and greater radiator area.
