May 25, 2023 · For me, trip-hop started out as a mix between hip-hop drums (downtempo/breakbeats) and psychedelic jazz, psychedelic soul, or trippy classical music. Like most genres, trip-hop has evolved a lot since its inception and now includes a mix of a bunch of different genres. So yeah, I find it a tough genre to define.

Apr 13, 2020 · Massive Attack was a little deeper into the electronic sound and hip hop. I feel that trip-hop also tended to function as electonica's more experimental arm at the time it was popular. I think of all the musical styles of the 90s trip-hop has the most direct descendants today. I hear it a lot in artists like Glass Animals and Tame Impala.

Apr 12, 2019 · I know Blue Lines is THE ultimate trip hop album and its practically blasphemy if you don't include it on your trip hop list, but I don't find it a good beginner album. It's not quite like any other trip hop album and its super dated sounding. Not an easy listen imo.

As far as trip-hop, the other big influence on the hip-hop scene was dub. This was the stylistic infusion that is more seen with early Massive Attack works. Trip-hop though generally became a blanket term for the developments within this new hip-hop scene, so captures both breakbeat, and dub halves. Two halves with also overlapped each other.
