Unless he is a complete idiot he can find room, 5 feet away from that membrane, for roughly 1.5 cubic yards of rubble.

May 5, 2007 · A 16" or 18" wide trench would be more realistic, and if it is being dug by machine, 20" is a more common bucket width on a back hoe or mini-excavator. OTOH, my reading here has taught me that methods for "building" footings are highly regional and dependant on the type of soil in the local in question.

Oct 19, 1999 · In other words, for illustration purposes, if the footer is 1 foot wide the width of the soil bearing the pressure 1 foot below the bottom of the footer is 2 feet wide. Or, assuming very firm soil, if you want to dig a 2' deep trench beside a footer, stay 2' away from the footer .
