The 620 was Reynolds 531CS main tubes (see the Trek tubespec in the front of the 1983 catalog on the Vintage Trek site), and some kind of CrMo forks and stays. The 720 was fully double-butted Reynolds 531, but a stiffer 10/7/10 downtube, very long chainstays, and different brake specs in different years.

So the first go-around with a 25.5" '85 620, I had a painted-black 620 frame with a dent by the BB shell (on the DT) and no fork. I found a 520 fork from the era as well as a 1985 620 fork from a 22.5" frame. After being in the middle of many projects, I eventually sold that project to a friend, who has taken it in his own direction.

531 tubesets were sold as the main triangle, 5 tubes, or 5 tubes plus fork blades. It's a cost/marketing trade off as Trek was growing up, I suppose. 620 vs 720 is more about different theories of how a touring frame should "work". The 720 is …

We are at the opposing ends of frame size, and I wonder how things were differently made at the 21" size vs. 25.5", to say nothing of rider strength and style. My 620 doesn't unduly flex in the manner that my fully-DB 531 1981/2 Trek 716 did. Same wheels and tires! The 620 is a remarkable balance between rigidity and flex.

The 620 employs 27" wheels with 27 x 1 1/4" tires, while the 500 is set up with 700C wheels and 700x25mm tires (and those tires measure a lot closer to 23mm by the time you're done with it). Doing some rough math, 700C to 27" = 8mm in BSD increase, or 4mm in rim radius increase. 1 1/4" tires = 32mm.
Bike Forums - Trek 620 1983 vs. 1985
Sep 16, 2012 · Just this simple variance tells me there were "options" available on the 1983 Trek 620 model, among which seems to be the wheelbase. I have a short 29" inseam at 5'10" tall (175 lbs), and although i would have preferred a 52cm-54cm frame, this bike set up with a riser stem and 3" rise mtn bike handlebars makes for a fine riding fixie currently.

I have a vintage 1984 Trek 620 touring bike. The frame size is 22.5" (56 cm). It is a beautiful bike and the bike is in excellent , practically mint, condition. It appears to be all original equipment from all the research that I have done on the bike. There …

The canti brakes are the main challenge on the 1984 620 - limits your options re: wheel size and hence fender use and tire size. The 1983 and earlier had caliper brakes that allows for the substitution of long-reach brakes, 650b wheels, etc. Still, the 84 620 is a very nice bike.

I had no problems with my 720 and SKS fenders, but haven't gotten Velo Orange fenders to work on the front of either my 620 or my Schwinn Voyageur SP. icepick_trotsky 10-29-15 08:12 AM
