The General Motors Electro-Motive Division F59PH series locomotives are a series of four-axle passenger diesel locomotives built as part of the EMD Dash-3 line. The original F59PH was designed at the behest of GO Transit, while the F59PHI was designed for the California Department of Transportation (Amtrak California).

The EMD F59PHI is a semi-high speed locomotive produced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1994 to 2001. It features an isolated cab, lightweight body, and a streamlined shape, features that were absent on the original commuter F59PH it was built from.

May 17, 2016 · The F59PHI is the second model Metra has purchased with EMDs 710 prime mover, following the acquisition of three F59s in 2014. The F59PHI was built between 1994 and 2001 and is the F59s successor which was built between 1988 and 1994.

The F59PHI, the “I” denoting the isolated cab, has an updated prime mover, the EMD 12-710G3B-EC, producing 3,000 horsepower, 65,195 lbf of tractive effort, and has a maximum speed of 110 mph. Interestingly, the locomotive is the first to meet California’s strict emissions standard when introduced in 1994.

TRE provides service six days a week from 4 AM (5 AM on Saturdays) to midnight (1 AM on Fridays). Trains are scheduled to arrive once every hour, or once every half-hour on weekdays during peak periods (4 to 9 AM and 2 to 7 PM).
