Tokelau, which is comprised of three coral atolls, Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu, has been a Trust Territory of New Zealand since 1925 and is substantially dependent on financial assistance from New Zealand [1]. It is situated in the Pacific Ocean, near Samoa.

Tokelau (/ ˈtoʊkəlaʊ / ⓘ; lit.'north-northeast' or 'north wind'; [8] known previously as the Union Islands, and, until 1976, known officially as the Tokelau Islands) [9] is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It consists of three tropical coral atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo.

Atene Kalolo is the First Lady of Tokelau and is President of the Atafu Women's Council. [1] In 2019, she gave the opening speech at a summit in Tokelau aimed at empowering women to enter politics. [2] She is married to the Ulu o Tokelau, Kelihiano Kalolo. [2] [3] They have two sons, one daughter and fifteen grand-children. [4]

There is no gender-discrimination in the citizenship and immigration rights of Tokelauans. In Tokelau, there is a distinct diference between the roles expected of women and men. Traditionally, women possess relatively high status based on their right to occupy property owned by their kin groups, and their role in managing the running of the home.

A fatupaepae is a matriarchal senior figure in the culture of Tokelau. [1] Fatupaepae groups are village-level women's organizations in Tokelau, with one such group in each atoll of the island territory: Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakafo. [2] [3]
