The only way to reach Tokelau is aboard the government vessel, MV Mataliki, which carries both passengers and (non-dangerous) freight from its home port of Apia to Tokelau. MV Mataliki Sailing Schedule

Transport to and from Tokelau is by sea on fortnightly boat services from the closest port in Apia, Samoa. The boat travels to all three atolls, taking approximately 24 hours to reach the southern most atoll of Fakaofo.

The only way in and out of Tokelau is to take a 25 to 40 hour boat trip after first traveling by water or air to Apia, Western Samoa from Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, or the Hawaiian Islands.

Travelling between the 3 atolls is only possible by boat. The MV Tokelau or some other boats that travel two or three times a month between Apia on Samoa and all three atolls. Sailing time is three hours between Fakaofo and Nukunonu, and five hours between Nukunonu and Atafu.

MV Tokelau was an inter-island ferry which served as Tokelau's main transport connection to the world from 1991 to 2012. The ship was built in 1991 as a 19m catamaran for use within Tokelau. [1] In 2000 it was converted to a mono-hull and lengthened to 30m in order to run an Apia to Tokelau service. [1]

Currently, Tokelau now operates a government-owned vessel: the Mataliki. The ship can carry up to 60 passengers internationally, or 120 between atolls. The Mataliki is scheduled to travel to Tokelau on a fortnightly basis.
