The Tippecanoe darter (Etheostoma tippecanoe) is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish, a darter from the subfamily Etheostomatinae, part of the family Percidae, which also contains the perches, ruffes and pikeperches. It is endemic to the eastern United States.

The tippecanoe darter is one of our smallest fishes, reaching a length of only 1 1/3 inches. The body and fins of males are basically dusky, with scattered dark spots and vertical banding rearward; the fins in both sexes are marginally pale, but basally spotted in the female. The top of the head between the eyes is very dark.

In 2018, we began a second translocation project with two new species: the Tippecanoe Darter (Etheostoma tippecannoe) and the Longhead Darter (Percina macrocephala). Both species have historic records in the upper Muskingum watershed, specifically the Walhonding River.
Gilt Darter, once found in several of the larger rivers of the Wabash River and Lake Erie drainages, is now only found in the upper Tippecanoe River. Variegate Darter is now restricted to the Whitewater River drainage in Indiana.

North America: Ohio River basin from western Pennsylvania to Indiana, and south to Tennessee River drainage in Virginia and Tennessee, USA. Inhabit shallow gravel riffles of medium-sized rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Adults feed on midge larvae and baetid mayfly nymphs (Ref. 10294). Eggs are found buried in the substrate (Ref. 7043).
