When it came time for Sisyphus to die, Zeus ordered Thanatos to chain Sisyphus up in Tartarus. Sisyphus cheated death by tricking Thanatos into his own shackles, thereby preventing the demise of any mortal while Thanatos was so enchained.

Jan 6, 2023 · In a few memorable myths, Thanatos found himself bested by mortals. Sisyphus, the king of Corinth, was even so bold as to bind Thanatos in chains when he came to take him to the Underworld. Sisyphus was thus able to escape death for a time. But his actions led to a dangerous crisis: with Thanatos in chains, death had been—temporarily—abolished.

In a myth, Thanatos was told by Zeus to chain King Sisyphus in the Underworld, as it was time for him to die. Sisyphus managed to chain Thanatos in his own fetters, thus protecting all mortals from dying while the god was chained.

While death being unable to fulfill his duty would have been good news for the mortals, Ares, the god of war, was sent into a rage; the battles he orchestrated were now futile.

With Thanatos in chains, Death did not come from anyone, and Hades found that no new residents were arriving in his realm, and Ares was observing battles were no one was dying. Ares himself went to Corinth to release Thanatos, and in the process Sisyphus was killed.
