Terchová (Hungarian: Terhely) is a large village and municipality (population 4,073) in the Malá Fatra mountains in the Žilina District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia. In the 16th century, the village was known as Kralowa alias Tyerchowa (1598). [5] . The name Kralowa means 'royal' in Slovak and refers to royal meadows.

Juraj Jánošík, a famous highwayman and a just defender of the poor, was born in 1688 in the village of Terchová, at the foot of the Malá Fatra mountain range. His birthplace was one of the isolated settlements near the village, lying on the side of the Kysucká vrchovina upland.
