Jul 2, 2019 · The first purpose-built passenger locomotive was the TEP60, a 3,000hp Co-Co first introduced in 1961. It was highly successful and more than 1,200 were delivered over the next 24 years. But something more powerful still was needed.

The TEP70 is a main line single-unit diesel locomotive, rated at 2,964 kW (3,975 hp), with AC/DC transmission and individual axle traction control, designed to haul passenger trains on the Russian gauge railway network of eastern Europe. As of 2022, it is still in service in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Kazakhstan.

From 1960 to 1987, a total of 1,472 diesel-electric engines of the class TEP60 were built, as well as 116 double units 2TEP60, totalling 1,704 units. Since 1961, the TEP60 locomotives hauled in Estonia up to 18-car and 1,050-tonne express trains.
