Apr 5, 2023 · The taeniae coli are three longitudinal bands of smooth muscle on the outer colonic wall that extend from the cecum to the distal sigmoid colon.

These bands are shorter than the other coats of the intestine, and serve to produce the sacculi which are characteristic of the cecum and colon; accordingly, when they are dissected off, the tube can be lengthened, and its sacculated character disappears.

In humans, the outer longitudinal layer, proximal to the rectum, forms three distinct longitudinal bands called taenia coli. Because the taenia are slightly shorter than the large intestine, the colon becomes sacculated between the taenia, forming the haustra (Figure 4).

The free tenia (L: taenia libera) runs at the opposite side of the attachment of the mesentery, (the 'anti-mesenteric' side). It is at the ventral side of the ascending and descending colon. On the transverse colon, it is on the postero-inferior side (see drawing below).
