The tench or doctor fish (Tinca tinca) is a fresh-and brackish-water fish of the order Cypriniformes found throughout Eurasia from Western Europe including Britain and Ireland east into Asia as far as the Ob and Yenisei Rivers. [3]

Tench are a stout, round minnow with a very short and thick caudal peduncle and square caudal fin. There is a single barb in each corner of the large, oblique mouth. The dorsal and anal fins are rounded. They have tiny scales and thick skin, giving them a very slimy feel. The iris of the eye is always colored orange to red.

Tench have dark olive to pale golden coloring and a white bronzy belly and bright red/orange eyes. They have a terminal mouth with a barbel at each corner. Fins are dark-colored and rounded, with no spines. You can help stop their spread by learning how to recognize Tench and keeping an eye out for this fish.

Eyes and Mouth: The eyes of a Tench are small and deep-set, while the mouth is soft, with two distinct barbels at each corner, which aid in locating food in murky waters. This unique combination of physical features makes the Tench not only adaptable but also a favorite among fishkeepers and anglers.

Tench live near the muddy bottoms of lakes and slow-moving rivers. They enjoy dense aquatic plant growth and are not generally seen in areas with very clear or fast-moving water. They become dormant in winter and stay in the mud without feeding.

These hatch within 4-6 days and the 4-5mm long larvae, which have coloured eyes and a black stripe from eye to the lower edge of the tail providing perfect camouflage, whilst they simply hang vertically from vegetation.

Head triangular, eye orange-red, small; snout relatively long; interorbital broad; mouth terminal, small in size with thick lips and a pair of well-developed barbels, one at each corner of the mouth. Caudal fin with 19 rays (Ref. 2196).
