Both Sherline and Taig have good little light duty motors…they’re just way under powered. You may have discovered the same issues. Plus, the Sherline motors don’t seem to like high work loads for long stretches of time.

Feb 15, 2018 · I generally advise European clients to purchase a Taig without the motor, and source one locally. You'd want one with close to the same specs: totally enclosed, fan-cooled, continuous duty, 3450 rpm, and 1/4 hp or better induction motor.

Dec 12, 2024 · However, I want to modify my Taig lathe by replacing the AC motor with one that I can use a reduced speed. The lowest spindle speed on the stock Taig is around 525 rpm. I have seen that many have converted to a DC motor with variable speed. Also many have used a Sherline motor and controller.

With that in mind, I list the following sources of motors which would work with the Taig. Taig supplies pulley sets which will work with 3/8" and 1/2" shaft motors. You can also get an extra headstock pulley substituted, so that you can use 5/8" shaft motors, just ask me when you order.

Feb 16, 2010 · The better bet would maybe look for a suitable fairly high grade DC motor or a servo motor and use a KB or Baldor SCR drive, these operate across either 120vac or 240vac 1 phase in for either a 90vdc or 180vdc motor.

May 27, 2010 · Uh...the top pulley speed range with the current motor on the CNC version of the Taig mill IS 10,000 RPM. If you have an older type motor than that type is slower. If your just wanting 10K RPM, upgrade to the newer motor from Taig.

The traditional Taig Motor uses pulleys to adjust the speed, but if you want on the fly speed adjustment. Your options were slim. I went all out and choose a 550 watt Brushless Servo Motor.
