Today, the name Tae Soo Do (Way of the Warrior Spirit, Korean: 태수도; Hanja: 太手道) refers to a martial art program created in 1990 by the World Hwa Rang Do Association as a beginners program to the martial art system Hwa Rang Do.

Tae Soo Do® is the Undergraduate Program for beginner Martial Artists. It is designed to help understand the fundamentals, basic mechanics, and philosophies inherent in the practice of martial arts. It is also considered the sport version of Hwa Rang Do®.

The Korean martial arts of TaeKwondo and Tang Soo Do have so much in common, while also having some key differences. Both were created out of turmoil in Korea and later became highly organized martial arts that are practiced by millions.

In 1990, Founder Dr. Joo-Bang Lee developed an undergraduate martial sport program for the martial art Hwa Rang Do and named it TAE SOO DO® (태수도 太手道). This name, which literally means the 'Way of the Great Hand', is metaphorically translated as the 'Way of the Warrior Spirit'.

Tae Soo Do was an early name for taekwondo. As the early kwans were coming together in the 1950s to develop a unified style of martial art for Korea (see: Taekwondo History), one of the questions that needed to be answered was what to call the new martial art.
