On the morning of December 16, 1960, United Airlines Flight 826, a Douglas DC-8, collided with Trans World Airlines Flight 266, a Lockheed L1049 Super Constellation. The TWA aircraft crashed at Miller Airfield on Staten Island. The United DC-8, however, continued several miles to the northeast and impacted the ground in Brooklyn.

TWA Flight 266, a Lockheed Constellation, departed Port Columbus Airport at 09:00 bound for New York-LaGuardia Airport. Around the same time, at 09:11, United Air Lines Flight 826 departed Chicago O'Hare Airport. The flight was carried out by DC-8 N8013U and was bound for New York-Idlewild Airport.
